Ingredients For Hot Dog Burnt Ends
The following simple ingredients will be needed to make this recipe:
Hot Dogs– I use Ball Park Franks, but feel free to experiment with different brands. I only used two packages, but in hindsight, I should have bought more.
Brown sugar- Brown sugar provides a touch of sweet, extra flavor to this recipe, and is a great way to add sweetness to any recipe!
Onion powder– is made from thin dehydrated onion fibers. This powder is sprinkled on blunt ends before cooking and thus incorporated into sauces.
Dry Rub – Meat Church’s all-purpose Gospel Dry Rub is a safe selection. Use what you have on hand, or go for one of the classics. If you mix the hotdogs with some yellow mustard it will help to stick everything together better.
Yellow Mustard – Gives the perfect tang to the mixture.
BBQ sauce –This sauce is the perfect complement to your pork. It brings out the natural flavor and adds a tangy finish to your grilled feast.
Teriyaki Sauce – is known for its combination with cooked blunt ends, and it also works in the oven or broiler, even in a slow cooker. The Teriyaki sauce blends the BBQ sauce and brown sugar together and furnishes the recipe with great flavor.
Supplies Needed For Hot Dog Burnt Ends
The following tools are required while making this hot dog burnt ends recipe:
Ziploc Bags – a favorite grilling accessory used for holding a sandwich or chips for lunch or marinating meat. Get the gallon size.
Disposable Aluminum Pan – Most of the time we grill burnt ends outside the home so a disposable aluminum pan is the best option.
Glass Bowl – Take a glass bowl to gather the ingredients together. You can do it in the disposable pan, but this is easier.
Instructions:
- Gather all the ingredients. Line up the dogs in the pan.
- Using your yellow mustard, coat the dogs generously all over, don’t forget the bottoms of the hot dogs.
- Next, add 1/2 cup of bbq sauce and 1/4 cup of brown sugar into the pan.
- Sprinkle the dogs’ top, sides, and bottoms with BBQ rub. Let the dogs soak in the marinade for a few minutes.
- Set up your smoker for cooking at 107°C using indirect heat.
- Place the hot dogs on the smoker and smoke them for about 1 hour or until they are 71°C in the center and get a little darker on the outside. After they are cooked, let’s get them back inside for the main event!
- To make these into traditional burnt ends, we’ll need to slice them up. Measure about 1-inch slices of hot dog for each cut; this makes the size perfect for toothpicks or finger-food style. Place the pieces into a half-size foil pan.
- To this pan, add ½ cup of barbecue sauce and ¼ cup of barbecue rub, as well as 1 cup of brown sugar. Stir this mixture together with the dog pieces to coat. They are now ready to be made into burnt ends.
- You’ll want to crank up the heat on the smoker to 375°F (191°C) or you can also use the grill or oven for this. If you have a pellet grill, that will work perfectly! The high heat will caramelize the sauce, rub and sugar on the hot dog pieces and turn them into yummy hot dog burnt ends.
- The bottom of these will begin to caramelize so you’ll want to stir them around about every 10-15 minutes until they reach the desired level of done that you like.
- For a little tasty charring, go about 30 or 40 minutes; this will vary depending on what you are cooking on and how burnt you like them.
